Dr. Matthew Hyzy, DO

Board-certified Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physician, fellowship-trained in interventional spine, sports medicine and orthobiologics.

About the Physician

Matthew William Hyzy, DO

Dr. Matthew Hyzy of Alpine Orthopedics and Longevity

Board-Certified Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Fellowship-Trained Interventional Spine, Sports Medicine & Orthobiologics

Dr. Matthew Hyzy is a board-certified Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physician (Physiatrist) specializing in non-surgical spine, orthopedic and musculoskeletal medicine, interventional spine procedures, sports medicine, and orthobiologics. For more than a decade, his clinical work has focused on restoring function and helping patients remain active through accurate diagnosis, precision image-guided procedures, and individualized non-surgical treatment.

Dr. Hyzy founded Alpine Orthopedics & Longevity to bring that experience into a more personalized model of medicine—fewer patients, longer appointments, and direct physician involvement throughout each patient's care.

Advanced Training

Spine, Sports Medicine & Orthobiologics

Dr. Hyzy completed his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Texas at Austin/Dell Medical School, where he served as Chief Resident. His residency training included extensive experience in musculoskeletal medicine, neurological rehabilitation, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, polytrauma, neurosurgery, chronic pain, and complex rehabilitation.

Following residency, he completed a dedicated fellowship at the Centeno-Schultz Clinic in Colorado in interventional spine, sports medicine, pain management, and regenerative orthopedics.

His subsequent clinical practice has included extensive use of diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance for the treatment of spine, joint, tendon, ligament, and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Regenerative Medicine

Experience in Orthobiologics

Dr. Hyzy has been involved in interventional orthopedics and orthobiologic medicine as both a clinician and published researcher. His experience includes platelet-rich plasma (PRP), platelet-based therapies, bone marrow concentrate (BMAC), and other autologous orthobiologic approaches for orthopedic and spinal conditions.

His research has included the use of bone marrow concentrate and platelet products for knee osteoarthritis, image-guided bone marrow concentrate treatment of anterior cruciate ligament injuries, epidural platelet lysate for lumbar radicular pain, and culture-expanded autologous mesenchymal stromal/stem cells for lumbar degenerative disc disease-associated radicular pain.

Dr. Hyzy also previously practiced internationally in the Cayman Islands, where his clinical experience included culture-expanded autologous cellular therapies. This experience provided exposure to regenerative medicine techniques beyond those currently available in his Colorado practice.

Culture-expanded cellular therapies are not offered at Alpine Orthopedics & Longevity.

Research

Published Research

Dr. Hyzy has contributed to peer-reviewed research involving interventional orthopedics and regenerative medicine, including:

Colorado Experience

Clinical Practice

From 2016 through 2023, Dr. Hyzy practiced interventional spine, sports medicine, pain medicine, and regenerative orthopedics at the Centeno-Schultz Clinic, where he became a partner and helped launch the practice's Lone Tree location in 2018.

His broader medical background also includes years of hospital-based Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation practice. He provided inpatient rehabilitation and PM&R consultation at Swedish Medical Center and Sky Ridge Medical Center, caring for patients with complex orthopedic and neurological conditions, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, polytrauma, amputation, and other disabling injuries.

This combination of outpatient interventional medicine and hospital-based rehabilitation gives Dr. Hyzy a perspective that extends beyond treating an abnormality on an MRI. His focus is on how an injury or condition affects the whole person—mobility, function, work, recreation, performance, and quality of life.

Academics

Teaching & Academic Medicine

Dr. Hyzy has served as a Volunteer Clinical Instructor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado and as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

He has also taught physicians in cadaver-based interventional orthopedics courses through the Interventional Orthobiologics Foundation, including applications of musculoskeletal ultrasound and image-guided orthobiologic procedures.

His teaching and presentations have covered musculoskeletal ultrasound, spine and orthopedic orthobiologics, osteoarthritis management, neurological rehabilitation, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, and future medical care.

Medical-Legal

Life Care Planning & Expert Work

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Hyzy maintains an independent medical-legal practice involving physiatry consulting, independent medical examinations, medical record review, expert witness work, and physician life care planning.

He is a Certified Life Care Planner (CLCP) through the International Commission on Health Care Certification and has experience evaluating future medical and rehabilitation needs following catastrophic injuries, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, polytrauma, orthopedic trauma, and other permanently disabling conditions.

Philosophy

The Alpine Approach

Patients often come to Alpine after persistent symptoms despite prior treatment or after being presented with increasingly invasive options. Dr. Hyzy believes the first step is getting the diagnosis right—taking the time to understand the history, perform a detailed examination, and personally review the patient's imaging.

Treatment may range from rehabilitation and conservative management to ultrasound- or fluoroscopy-guided procedures, PRP, BMAC and other appropriate orthobiologic treatments. The objective is not simply to treat an MRI finding, but to identify the source of the patient's problem and use the least invasive appropriate treatment to restore function.

Alpine was created around a straightforward philosophy: fewer patients, more physician time, thoughtful diagnosis, precision treatment, and a long-term focus on mobility, performance, and health.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Hyzy enjoys the Colorado active lifestyle, including mountain biking, snowboarding, paddle boarding, yoga, fitness, and exploring the Rocky Mountains. Most importantly, he enjoys spending time with his two children, family, and friends.

The clinic is located at 7350 E Progress Pl #201, Greenwood Village, CO 80111, open Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm.

How We Practice

  1. 01

    A private practice, by design

Alpine is deliberately low-volume. Appointments are long, schedules are protected, and you are never one of forty patients on a board.

  2. 02

    The physician does everything

Dr. Hyzy performs your exam, reads your imaging, and does your procedure himself — no technicians, no rotating providers.

  3. 03

    Fellowship-trained in interventional orthopedics

Board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation with a decade-plus focused on interventional spine, sports medicine, and regenerative orthopedics.

  4. 04

    Image guidance on every procedure

Ultrasound and fluoroscopy put the injection exactly where the problem is, instead of near it.

  5. 05

    Second opinions before surgery

If you've been told you need a spine or joint operation, we review the imaging and lay out the non-surgical options in full.

  6. 06

Orthopedics and longevity under one plan

Procedures, strength and recovery work, hormone and peptide optimization, and body composition are coordinated by one physician.

Been told you need spine or joint surgery? Call or text for a second opinion.
