Overview

What Baker's Cyst Actually Is

A Baker's cyst is a symptom, not a diagnosis — it forms because the knee is producing excess fluid, usually from arthritis or a meniscal problem. Draining it without treating the cause means it comes back. Ultrasound both guides aspiration and identifies the underlying driver.

Also called: popliteal cyst

Symptoms patients describe

  • Fullness or tightness behind the knee
  • Pain with deep bending
  • A palpable lump behind the joint
  • Occasional calf discomfort if the cyst leaks

Diagnosis

How It's Confirmed Here

  1. 01

    Hands-on exam

Each structure is loaded separately so the source is narrowed before any imaging is ordered.

  2. 02

    Imaging review

Your existing films are reviewed independently by Dr. Hyzy — not just the outside report.

  3. 03

    In-room ultrasound

Dynamic imaging while you move, so tissue quality and behavior are seen live.

  4. 04

    Diagnostic guided injection

When more than one structure could be responsible, a targeted block confirms which one is.
